Donna Rockbabe. Putting an alternative slant on Rock of the North , Donna
reports on different aspects of the local scene and beyond.
Donna's Latest Blog March 26th 2011
Hello again, It's been a
few weeks since my last blog but there hasn't been much
going on in my little rock world to be honest. So, I decided to save up
all the good bits
until there was enough to talk about!
Firstly I have some updates on bands and events that I have been
previously blogging about
and following intently.
Soraia update - Http://www.soraia.com
Soraia are starting work on their new album in Mid April which will be
the follow up to their debut album, "Shed The Skin".
Jon Bon Jovi has offered them the use of his personal recording studio
at his place in New Jersey. As if that wasn't enough of an honour,
Jon has also expressed to the band that he would like to be involved
in the process of the album as well!
So you can imagine how exited Soraia are at this amazing news!
What's more exciting to the fans is that it is surely going to be
a fantastic album and I really can't wait to hear it.
You can now watch new videos on their website and there are
also lots of audio links up on there too.
---------------------
One Soul Thrust update - http://onesoulthrust.com/
One Soul Thurst have recently signed a management deal with Cameron
Tilbury Publications.
The band are currently getting radio airplay on 11 stations so far,
including Total Rock
in London. Their album is getting rave reviews and has recently gone
"Pirate" platinum,
which basically means that more copies have been downloaded illegally
then have been purchased!
This is of course a large bone of contention for the band and their
manager/publicist
and you can read more about it on their facebook page and also join in
the discussion.
-------------------
StoneRun update -
http://www.stonerun.co.uk/
StoneRun are going back on the road shortly and you can catch them at
the following
Yorkshire venues:
21/04/11 - THE BASEMENT, YORK
22/04/11 - BAR 15, HALIFAX
05/05/11 - YARDBIRDS, GRIMSBY
07/05/11 - CARPE DIEM, LEEDS
20/05/11 - THE RINGSIDE, HULL
27/05/11 - CORPORATION, SHEFFIELD
29/05/11 - THE SNOOTY FOX, WAKEFIELD
Please refer to their website for a full list of tour dates and other
news.
----------------
Rock 'n'Wrestle update -
http://www.rocknwrestle.co.uk/site/news.php
The Rock 'n' Wrestle festival is now a 3 day event and the line up has
finally been announced.
Great to see lots of familiar and local bands have been selected.
There is a voting system in place for 5 more bands to join the line up.
You can read more about this event at the official website.
---------------
I've only got one other band to recommend this time and that is a fairly
local band
from Hull who go be the name of "Lavellion". They are well worth seeing
live, if you get the chance.
They compare their sound to rock greats like Pearl Jam and Thin Lizzy
and also tip their hats
to Kings Of Leon. I personally thought they were very akin to early
Matchbox Twenty,
which is probably why they made me sit up and take notice.
Anyway, their official website is currently under construction but you
can check them out
at this link:
http://www.facebook.com/lavellion.
They have recently played a couple of gigs at the Snooty Fox in
Wakefield and are going
to be there again with none other than "StoneRun" on May 29th.
Here is a brief Bio:
Lavellion mix ballsy blues based riffs with an upbeat funky style,
combined with a unique
and charismatic front man to match any modern day rock n roll band.
After nearly 3 years of progressing and development, Lavellion have
tweaked their sound
into a tight and powerful stage show.
The band is made up of the original old-school rocker quartet of a
soulful frontman,
dramatic distorted guitar, stomping drums and a deep pounding bass. With
influences
ranging from classic rockers Thin Lizzy and Pearl Jam, to the modern day
swagger of
Kings of Leon, Lavellion have created a relevant sound to appeal to the
wider
rock n roll of all ages.
Until next time... Rocketh On!!

Rockbabe's Blog 3 Below
Hello again! I've got a few more bands that I'd like to tell you about.
First up is a very local band who go by the name of GOGGLE EYED PSYCHO.
G.E.P (for short) are fronted by one of Wakefield's finest musicians,
Dylan McPrice.
With a name like "Goggle Eyed Psycho" You could almost be fooled into
thinking that
they are some sort of demented thrash metal band, but you would be
completely wrong.
In fact their music is so non-offensive, original and uplifting that it
seems to
carry you along like a surfer riding the waves. Team that with Dylan's
outstanding
vocal ability and you have something very special indeed.
G.E.P could be considered as "The Snooty Fox’s resident band" as they
have played
there so many times, they are always a delight to see live and are not
afraid to
experiment with new songs and to evolve into what they want to
ultimately be.
They have a few local gigs already booked and with a planned album in
the works
for 2011 too, things are looking good for G.E.P.
Current gigs:
5th February - The Hop, Wakefield (w/ The Magic Droids Band and Clown)
5th March - Blue Light, Alverthorpe, Wakefield (w/ Black Flowers Audio)
12th March - The Poloma, Sheffield (Sheffield Unsigned night)
19th March - Snooty Fox, Wakefield (w/ Isolysis, Martyr De Mona and The
M.O)
You can listen to some of their songs here:
http://www.reverbnation.com/goggleeyedpsycho
Here is a brief band Bio:
Hailing from the recesses of deepest darkest Wakefield,
Goggle-Eyed-Psycho have played
a very active part in the Wakefield music scene since forming in 2007,
always turning
heads and making new friends along the way with their eclectic yet
soulful brand of
melodic hard rock.
Originally formed as an outlet for Vocalist/Guitarist McDyl, GEP quickly
recorded their
first E.P, 'The Attack of Goggle-Eyed-Psycho' which received favourable
reviews from
local critics, yet only ever received a viral release, with CDR's
changing hands all
throughout the Wakefield area.
Combining crunchy riffs, solid rhythms, melodic yet powerful vocals and
mesmerizing
Key work, Goggle-Eyed-Psycho have crafted a sound that is familiar, yet
fresh, solid
and diverse with songs that are misleadingly simple and memorable yet
equally complex
and challenging. Given their extensive blend of influences, there is
something for music
lovers of all types to enjoy.
2011 promises to be a very exciting year, with extensive gigging and a
full album planned,
prepare yourself for the revenge of Goggle-Eyed-Psycho!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heading further North now, to the North East in fact with a band called
FALLING RED.
"Falling Red" are a fantastic glam/sleaze fest of all that is fun about
rock 'n' roll.
Their live shows are very high energy with lots of crowd interaction and
fist pumping
songs. Each member is a joy to watch as they all have their part to play
and they certainly
play it to perfection. They have balls of steel and will tell you so in
no uncertain terms.
They specifically set out to meet the Pope on his UK visit last year,
slipped past security
and handed him a copy of their CD, "Shake the Faith". I kid you not!
(Well, that's what they said, and I believe them!)
"Falling Red" are every Granny's nightmare but every young rock chick's
dream!
Looking and sounding like the offspring of Motley Crue, with an
abundance of energy
and feistiness, it's hardly surprising that these guys have not gone
unnoticed.
Signed to the "Rocksector" record label and under the management of "Raz
White",
their second album is already in the works with another full U.K tour
beginning in April.
I am really looking forward to seeing them again very soon.
Here is a recent press release from Rocksector Records:
Falling Red announce a co-headlining tour with Sweden/Denmark's
Star*Rats, with support
from Velvet Star. The tour begins with a warm-up show on March 26th,
followed by 9 UK
dates & the launch of a new EP at Carlisle, The Brickyard on April 1st.
The EP is titled "Hasta La Victoria Siempre"
Falling Red put their stamp firmly on the glam/sleaze landscape in 2010
with the release
of their debut album "Shake The Faith" & a host of electrifying tour
performances
including dates with "Sebastian Bach", "Tigertailz", "Vains Of Jenna",
"The Erotics", "
Black Spiders", "Dave Evans" (ex-AC/DC) & "Dirty Penny"....!
Here's a brief bio:
"Falling Red" aren't Saturday evening family entertainment, they are a
glimpse back
to the heady, rebellious days (or daze) of 70s Punk & 80s Sunset Strip.
They have that essential raw energy that demands attention because you
just know their
undying enthusiasm is going to take them to the hearts of a brand new
generation of Rock fans.
Songs such as "How You Feel (on me)", "Out Of Control" & "You Were Out
To Get Me"
are screaming to hit Rock Radio's play lists.
You can hear some of their songs as these websites:
http://www.myspace.com/fallingredband
http://www.reverbnation.com/fallingredband#!
Gig dates:
April
1 - The Brickyard, Carlisle (EP launch) *
2 - Wildside, Nottingham *
3 - Yardbirds, Grimsby *
4 - Satan's Hollow, Manchester *
5 - Snooty Fox, Wakefield *
6 - The Dome, London *
7 - Stereo, York *
8 - Hyem, Newcastle *
10 - Classic Grand, Glasgow *
May
6 - Gasworks, Bradford
7 - O2 Academy, Newcastle
-----------------------------------------------------------
On a similar note now but much further across the pond are a band called
THE LAST VEGAS - who hail from Chicago.
Reminiscent of the American glam/rock scene of the mid 80's, "The Last
Vegas"
really deliver the goods and more.
Their "Whatever Gets You Off" album is jam packed full of great big,
loud in your
face rock anthems and is dripping with dirty guitars. Visually, frontman
"Chad Cherry"
looking more like Bon Scott than Bon Jovi, struts about in his skin
tight leather jeans
and sings songs about loose lips and being bad.
They soon caught the eye of aforementioned "Motley Crue" and their
current single
"Apologize" was co-written by Nikki Sixx.
A great band worth checking out if you like your rock on the sleazy
side.
The Last Vegas are currently finishing material for a follow-up album
for a spring 2011
release in UK, Europe & United States.
You can read more about them at their official website:
http://www.thelastvegas.com/home
until next time..
ROCKETH ON!!!
Donna Rockbabe.
Donna's Blog 2 Below
Firstly I would like to give an update on two of the bands I wrote about
last week.
BROKEN's headlining gig at the Snooty Fox last Saturday went very well,
great crowd and a great atmosphere. Four bands played and all were very
well received.
The DVD for Broken is being worked on and should be available for
viewing soon.
I am looking forward to seeing that.
The band have also recently announced that they will be playing at the
"Rock 'n' wrestling"
party on Friday 28th Jan, which is being held at the Thunder Dome on
Horbury Bridge, Wakefield.
tickets only £2.00 and can be purchased at -
www.ukwrestlingexperience.co.uk.
ONE SOUL THRUST have landed a nomination at the 2011 Edmonton Music
Awards in Canada.
The Canadian rockers have been nominated in the "Best Metal/Hard Rock
Artist" category.
Congratulation to them! - One Soul Thrust are also currently enjoying
international radio
attention with their debut single, "Go Home And Melt" (featuring rock
legend Glenn Hughes).
----------------------
Staying with the international bands for a moment, it gives me great
pleasure to introduce
another female fronted rock band who go by the name of SORAIA.
SORAIA hail from Philadelphia, P.A and are making quite a name for
themselves State-side.
Their debut album "Shed The Skin" was released in 2008 and was produced
by Bon Jovi's studio sound engineer
Obie O'Brien. They are currently working on the follow up which is due
for release this year I believe with a possible European tour!
They have a couple of high profile gigs coming up soon, The
Whisky-a-Go-Go in L.A in February
and on March 2nd in Philadelphia when they will be the main support for
the highest grossing
touring band in the world right now, the mighty BON JOVI!!
SORAIA are no strangers to this honour or to BON JOVI's fan base as they
have opened the show
for the Jersey Boys a few times before.
SORAIA work really hard and ZouZou (Sue) Mansour is constantly updating
her fans with their daily activity,
which comprises of writing, rehearsing, video shoots, press and of
course gigs.
There is never a dull moment keeping track of this band, I can tell you!
You can check them out for yourself at these links:
http://www.soraia.com
http://www.facebook.com/soraia.music
http://www.reverbnation.com/soraia
Here is a brief Bio:
Heart, Soul, and Rock ‘n’ Roll are the rare, potent blend – the perfect
storm of passion that
fuels Philadelphia-born soul-rock band, SORAIA. Infusing their
hard-hitting, no-frills rock ‘n’ roll
with soulful influences drawn from their muses, SORAIA creates songs
immediately reminiscent of tunes
you’ve been humming your entire life.
Listening to SORAIA is coming back home to the open arms of authentic,
real rock ‘n’ roll.
Formed in 2004, SORAIA has at the helm the force of nature that is alpha
front woman ZouZou Mansour.
Channelling her inner demons and gut wrenching passion, Mansour’s naked
with emotion vocals touch
the most passive of listeners to their very core.
In the studio and on stage, each band member leaves his distinctive
fingerprint on the music;
but whether it’s her honey-whiskey voice enveloping you in a warm
embrace or her primal ferocity
displayed during a live performance, it’s Mansour’s unyielding intensity
and soul-searching lyrics
which set SORAIA apart from the wannabes chasing the fame bandwagon.
Smart and funny, confident and brazen, wounded and resolved, tender and
tough, leather and lace,
one of the boys yet a girl’s girl, everyone wants a piece of Zou.
SORAIA is the real deal, focused on songwriting, sacrifice…sweat. Live,
they are a loud, raunchy,
dirty eruption of flesh and sound: all the allure and danger rock ‘n’
roll promised to be.
-----------------------------
Back on home turf now and what better band to welcome you home with than
the fabulous STONERUN.
STONERUN are from Sheffield and have had quite a wild and successful
ride since forming in 2008.
They have been runners up in a few Battle of the Bands competitions,
including WTP promotions
B.O.T.B's at the Snooty Fox in early 2010.
Off the back of that they were asked to perform on the second day of the
"Wakefield Rock Festival."
This put them in good stead to go on and perform at last years "Clarence
Park Festival."
With a full tour diary for 2010 and 3 EP's under their belts, 2011 is
already looking bright
as they will be performing as support at the 02 academy in Leeds on
February 19th and will
be announcing a string of tour dates very soon.
STONERUN are a firm favourite with everyone who comes in contact with
them and they never
fail to delight and rock you to the core with their live shows.
They seem to emit such an energy and passion while performing which is
very alluring
and always leave you wanting more.
I simply love these guys and look forward to hearing and seeing them
again very soon.
You can listen to their music at these websites:
http://www.reverbnation.com/stonerunmusic
http://www.myspace.com/stonerunmusic
Add/like them on Facebook too @
http://www.facebook.com/pages/StoneRun/359249506980
Here is a brief bio:
Members: Tommy Jones, John Gilmartin, Joe Hearnshaw, Tom George, Neil
Carden.
StoneRun formed in 2009, have self-released three EP's and not stopped
touring
the UK in order the get their music to as many people as possible. Being
featured
in magazines such as ..Kerrang.. and ..Classic Rock.. has helped the
band gain fans from
all over the world. 2010 saw the band reach new heights with headline
slots at Sheffield's
Corporation, festival appearances at Clarence Park and The Cockermouth
Rock Festival,
and a live session for the BBC. The third EP “..III..” was released on
1st October
and coincided with the start of a 25-date UK tour in October and
November. ....
All three EP's are available from all good download stores, as well as
in their physical
form from ....www.stonerun.co.uk....
------------------------------
Another local band now, lock up your daughters coz it's KARMASLAVE.
KARMASLAVE hail from Leeds and are a great, fun, sleaze, rock band.
They have been together for 3 years and have played with well
established pro. bands
such as ENUFF ZNUFF, FASTER PUSSYCAT, DIRTY PENNY, FALLING RED and
SUICIDE TUESDAY.
They have headlined many gig's too, at local venues “The Snooty Fox”,
Leeds and Bradford Rios.
2011 is already shaping up nicely for them with 3 Gigs booked so far:
Bradford Rios 19th March 2011 - (Headlining with support from
Dreamcatcher)
The Springboard Festival in Cottingham on Saturday 28th May at The
Hallgate Tavern
Nottingham 16th May, The Central Live Music Venue.
You can find out more about them at these websites:
www.reverbnation.com/KARMASLAVE
www.myspace.com/karmaslavemusic
www.twitter.com/KARMA_SLAVE
Band Bio:
Members: Izzy Roads - Lead Vocals, Danny Darkhorse - Lead/Rhythm guitar,
Spider - Bass/ Vocals, Matt Holmes - Drums
KARMASLAVE was formed in February 2008 in Leeds, West Yorkshire,
with an uncharacteristically hard rock sound, thrashy guitars and unique
song writing,
they rely on various '80s/90's rock/metal formulas but hard rock was
always the aim of the game.
The band spent the biggest part of 2008, playing a series of local clubs
in Leeds.
In early May 2009 they released the long awaited EP "SHOT AT THE BAR".
----------------------------------
I hope there is something for all tastes here and until next time,
Rocketh On!
Donna Rockbabe.
Donna's Blog One is below:
I've been an avid and passionate music fan for as long as I can
remember.
A few past projects have included showcasing new bands on the Hairball
John Radio
website and radio show and having a "Rockbabe Recommends" segment on
some of the earlier
"The Rock Show" podcasts. This gave me the confidence and inspiration to
fulfill
an ambition of hosting my own rock radio show on an internet and FM
based radio station.
In 2010, I put together 12 hour long shows, playing all of my favourite
classic rock
and new music and also brought back my "Rockbabe recommends" segment
where I featured
a track from an unsigned band.
The station is sadly no longer on the air, but I am always on the look
out for good rock
radio stations to support and to maybe start up another radio show in
the future.
It always gives me great joy to be able to openly wax lyrical about some
of my favourite
unsigned and signed bands, local and not so local.
So without further ado, for my debut blog I have 3 fantastic local bands
and one International
band who should definitely be heard and seen as soon as possible!
Please allow me to introduce a local band who hail from Wakefield and
Sheffield
who go by the name of BROKEN.
I first saw BROKEN open the second day of the Wakefield Rock Festival
2010
and was instantly drawn to them. They looked and sounded like a pro.
band
So I was very surprised to find out that it was only their second gig!
I was very impressed with the quality of their songs which are also
highly original and contemporary while still retaining the classic rock
vibe.
They are thoroughly nice guys too and With their new manager/promoter
now on board,
I see great things happening for them in 2011 and beyond.
They are headlining at the Snooty Fox in Wakefield this Saturday (15th)
and will also be filming a live DVD.
You can hear some of their music at these websites:
http://www.myspace.com/brokenrockuk
www.reverbnation.com/brokenrockuk
Their bio goes like this:
The perfect mix of hard rock swagger & groove metal riffs are brought
together by
Jim Moore’s powerful vocals & Neil Morris’s awesome guitar playing.
Backed up by the tight rhythm machine of Jon Iliffe on drums & Fraser on
bass,
Broken create truly infectious, kick ass grooves!
Born from the ashes of an existing Wakefield based band, Neil & Fraser
were re-united
with Jim & late in 2009 discovered Jon who completed the current line
up.
Wasting no time they began writing hard & played their first gig in
December 2009.
Going from strength to strength as a live force whilst continuing to
develop their
sound with new material, Broken have gathered a strong & loyal
following.
This following was evident in the number of votes gained which gave them
the opening
slot on the Main stage of this summer’s "Wakefield Rock Festival".
Broken are dedicated to continue this growth & Rock stages across the UK
in 2011
with their original but reassuringly familiar sound that cannot be
categorised
but will always get a venue bouncing.
Broken are now working with manager Jim Cameron of the "Wakefield Rock
Festival"
and "J & M Promotions"...Don’t miss 'Broken' at a venue near you soon!!
Forthcoming gigs
15th January - The Snooty Fox, Wakefield.
with support from Lavellion - Goggle Eyed Psycho - Red Riding Quartet
27th March - The Snooty Fox, Wakefield
supporting Enochian Theory - Tickets > http://www.wegottickets.com/event/103407
---------------------------
Another brilliant Wakefield/Barnsley band who you should be aware of are
THE INVISIBLE IDOLS.
Their first album is superb and I am really looking forward to hearing
the second.
A very hard working and successful band to date, who's Bio speaks for
itself.
Website links to hear some of their music:
www.invisibleidols.com
www.myspace.com/invisibleidols
Formed in November 2008, Invisible Idols are a Yorkshire based rock
power trio consisting
of Matt Black lead vocals/guitar (ex A Foreigners Journey, Stagefright),
Joe Lally bass
(ex Mr Chief, Metallica UK) and Paul Darby (Troika).
The Idols have material co-written some with Zal Cleminson from 70's
Scottish rockers
"The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" and "Nazareth".
Since their opening sell out show at Barnsley's Lucorum in June 2009 the
band have
performed at some great venues such as Sheffield's O2 Academy, Revolver
in Birkenhead,
JBs in Dudley, Mustang Sally's in Wakefield, Ivory Blacks in Glasgow,
Yardbirds in Grimsby and many more.
With appearances at events such as SAHBStock, Yorkshire Rock & Bike
Show,
East Leeds Lion's Rally they have already built up a great following
which is
constantly growing online.
Invisible Idols have supported many established signed artists such as
Danny Vaughn,
H.E.A.T, Jaded Heart, Crimes Of Passion, Seven Dayz, Kajagoogoo and
more.
Following a successful debut album "Highway Child" and UK Tour in 2010;
The Idols are to
release their second album "Dark Angel" in Easter 2011 which will be
followed by a UK Tour
in May.
------------------------------
Another "Wakefield Rock Festival" band who are currently making rockin'
waves
are female fronted - FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.
They seem to get better each time I see them performing live.
A very original sounding, quite heavy rock band with great songs which
you can't help
sing along to, even the one with a swear word in it! I wont say what
swear word it is
as I promised Steve I'd keep my blogs clean! ha ha.
Anyhow, FFFT are a great feel good band who will definitely put a smile
on your face
and leave you wanting more.
Website Linkage:
www.myspace.com/furtherfromthetruthuk
Their Bio:
FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH are a super-charged, female fronted heavy rock
band from West Yorkshire.
The band members are Kat (Vox), James (Guitar), Nick (Guitar), Craig
(Bass) and Mark (Drums).
2010 was a good year for FFTT - they smashed their way to the finals of
the WTP Music Battle of the Bands
in March, they ripped up the stage at the Wakefield Rock Festival in
May.
They owned The Crown of Lights Summer Festival in July, began a long
term relationship with
Femme Metal Records in August, completed their first 5 track EP in
September and finished the year
with a massive gig at The Cockpit in Leeds in December. Roll on 2011!
Gig Dates
21st Jan: The Comrades Club, Heckmondwike, West Yorks
26th Feb: The Miller, London
5th March: Carpe Diem, Leeds, West Yorks
-----------------------------
Last but not least, the international band who have recently come to my
attention are
from Canada and they are - ONE SOUL THRUST.
One Soul Thrust are a female fronted band who's debut single "Go Home
And Melt"
certainly made my ears prick up as it is a fantastic duet with the one
and only Glenn Hughes.
You can hear and buy their music at these links:
www.reverbnation.com/onesoulthrust
www.cdbaby.com/cd/OneSoulThrust
And of course, iTunes.
www.onesoulthrust.com
Their Bio:
One Soul Thrust- 1ST for short- puts their passion where their mouth is.
And out of that mouth comes the group’s signature sound via lead
vocalist/songwriter,
Salem Jones. Put Heart’s Ann Wilson and Queensryche’s Geoff Tate in a
blender,
Ignore all except the tastiest of screams. Mix. Pour.
Now throw on their latest opus, “1ST” released in June 2010.
Wielding presence and mystique with an understated but confident
sexuality,
Salem is the full meal deal of rock singers.
Add drummer Todd Pretty’s pounding unique hypno-grooves, Italian bassist
Anna Portalupi’s rock thunder and guitarist Jag Mollerup’s thoughtfully
aggressive chords and you have the members of what one US journalist
called
“one of Canada’s best kept secrets”.
1ST is not, thankfully, a secret to all specifically current and former
members
of Canada’s Tupelo Honey, Nickelback and The Northern Pikes with whom
they’ve worked in
the past.
Allman Bros/Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes has an amp designed by Jag and
even Europe hears
the 1ST song with well-known Italian musician and producer Alessandro
Del Vecchio choosing
to produce their debut CD.
Notably on that CD, Salem made history by being the first Canadian
singer
(and the 2nd female singer in the world) to record a duet with The Voice
of Rock,
Deep Purple's Glenn Hughes.
Hughes loved her voice and songs enough to suggest they work together
again.
In addition to working with Hughes, and though schedules would not
permit this cool
event to happen - in 2010 she was also invited to sit in with Janis
Joplin’s Big Brother
& The Holding Company, a serious mark of respect in the rock world.
